Female Cockatoo

A Female Cockatoo can be a wonderful companion for an owner who understands that these parrots are intelligent, social, demanding, and a long-term commitment. Cockatoos vary considerably by species, so I always look at the individual bird rather than making promises based only on sex.

When I raise or prepare a young cockatoo for a new home, I pay close attention to how she responds to handling, people, food, toys, and everyday household activity. A confident bird should have opportunities to explore and learn without being overwhelmed. Cockatoos are naturally social and can become excessively dependent on human attention if their environment does not provide enough independent enrichment.

What to Know Before Bringing Her Home

One thing I tell prospective owners is not to choose a bird simply because she is female. Mature females of some cockatoo species can sometimes be distinguished by lighter brown or reddish-brown irises, but appearance is not a dependable way to sex every young bird.

Her new home should include a sturdy, appropriately sized enclosure, safe chewing materials, varied perches, foraging opportunities, and plenty of daily interaction. Cockatoos also need a nutritionally balanced diet rather than an all-seed menu.
