Cockatoos products should never be chosen simply because a bird looks beautiful in a photograph. When I talk with prospective owners, I first want them to understand the personality and daily responsibility that comes with bringing one of these parrots home. Cockatoos are intelligent, highly social birds that can form strong bonds with their people, but they also require substantial attention, enrichment, exercise, and patience. Depending on the species, reported lifespans commonly range from about 25 to 45 years, with some larger cockatoos capable of living considerably longer.

What I Consider Before a Bird Goes Home

In my experience, the best match is not necessarily the youngest or most colorful bird. I look at the individual bird’s behavior, confidence around people, eating habits, and ability to settle after normal handling. A prospective owner should also consider the species carefully. A smaller cockatoo may have very different space, noise, and interaction requirements from a large Moluccan or umbrella cockatoo.

Noise is particularly important. Cockatoos can produce extremely loud calls, especially when seeking attention or becoming frustrated. They also have powerful beaks and a natural need to chew, so owners should provide sturdy, bird-safe toys and replace worn items rather than allowing the bird to turn household furniture into a chew toy.

Food, Space and Daily Routine

Nutrition is another area I encourage buyers to take seriously from day one. Veterinary guidance recommends a nutritionally balanced pelleted diet as the foundation, supplemented with appropriate fresh vegetables and limited fruit or treats. Seeds should not be relied upon as the complete diet because seed-heavy feeding can leave important nutritional gaps. Fresh drinking water should also be available and water dishes cleaned every day.

Housing should give the bird enough room to move, climb and stretch comfortably. Large cockatoos need particularly strong, spacious cages with secure doors, appropriate bar spacing and sturdy perches. Daily opportunities for supervised activity and foraging are also important because mental stimulation is part of normal parrot care.
